Saudi Investment Forum Opens, Clouded by Writer’s Death

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — A high-profile economic forum in Saudi Arabia began on Tuesday in Riyadh, with the crown prince making a brief public appearance at the kingdom’s first major event since the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul earlier this month.

Khashoggi’s death loomed large over the start of the event, known as the Future Investment Initiative, which came as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that Saudi officials murdered Khashoggi in their Istanbul consulate after plotting his death for days.

The Turkish leader demanded the kingdom reveal the identities of all involved in the killing, regardless of rank.

Saudi Arabia, which for weeks maintained Khashoggi had left the consulate, on Saturday acknowledged he was killed there in a “fistfight.” Turkish media and officials say a 15-member Saudi team was flown in to kill Khashoggi. They say the team cut off his fingers before killing and dismembering the 59-year-old Washington Post columnist, who had written critically about Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Prince Mohammed has come under mounting pressure, with critics suspecting he ordered the high-profile operation or at least knew about it. Saudi authorities say they have arrested suspects and dismissed senior officials, but the crown prince has thus far escaped blame.

On Tuesday, King Salman and Prince Mohammed received Khashoggi’s son, Salah, and his brother, Sahel, at the Yamama Palace in Riyadh, where the two royals expressed their condolences. A friend of the Khashoggi family told The Associated Press that Salah has been under a travel ban since last year. The individual spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing reprisal.

Later Tuesday, the crown prince attended the investment forum alongside King Abdullah II of Jordan. Prince Mohammed sat front-row in the audience of an afternoon session and then looked at some promotional booths outside the main hall as an excited crowd of mostly young Saudi men filmed the encounter on their phones.

At the opening of the conference, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih described the journalist’s killing as “abhorrent.” Some of the forum’s keynote speakers and numerous Western executives and officials had cancelled plans to attend over Khashoggi’s Oct. 2 slaying.

“As we all know, these are difficult days for us in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” al-Falih said in a speech to attendees seated in the forum’s ornate hall.

“Nobody in the kingdom can justify it or explain it. From the leadership on down, we’re very upset at what has happened,” he added, referring to Khashoggi’s slaying.

The forum is the brainchild of Prince Mohammed and is aimed at drawing more foreign investment into the kingdom to help create desperately needed jobs for millions of young Saudis entering the workforce in the coming years.

Despite the absence of key executives and speakers from the United States and other Western partners, some $50 billion in deals were signed Tuesday at the forum, with Russian and Asian businesses and officials eager to do business with the kingdom.

“Those partners who are here with us today to continue that journey with us are certainly going to look back and find out … how committed the kingdom is to its partners that stay the course,” al-Falih said, just moments before several deals were inked on stage.

The forum last year grabbed headlines when Prince Mohammed wowed the crowd of global business titans with pledges to lead the ultraconservative kingdom toward “moderate Islam.” He also announced plans to build a $500 billion futuristic city in the desert.

At the time, Prince Mohammed spoke on stage alongside Stephen Schwarzman of U.S. private equity firm Blackstone.

Schwarzman is among those who’ve backed out of attending this year. Others include U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who met with Prince Mohammed separately before the forum, according to Saudi state television.

Among its many investments domestically and abroad, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, which the crown prince oversees, has invested $20 billion in a U.S.-focused infrastructure fund with Blackstone.

The Public Investment Fund has also invested $3.5 billion in ride-sharing firm Uber, whose CEO Dara Khosrowshahi also backed out of attending this year’s forum.

Lubna Olayan, a Saudi businesswoman moderating the forum’s first session Tuesday, opened with remarks about Khashoggi.

“As we gather here in Riyadh this morning, it is natural that our thoughts tend to focus on recent events surrounding the death of Jamal Khashoggi — a writer, a journalist and a Saudi journalist known to many of us,” she said. “May he rest in peace.”

She added that such “terrible acts … are alien to our culture and DNA.” Some in the crowd applauded her remarks.

Directors of the Saudi, Russian and United Arab Emirates’ sovereign wealth funds took part in the opening panel. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan headlined another session, with Jordan’s King Abdullah II expected to speak at the forum on Wednesday.

“I think this conference will open the gateways to Asian and Russian investment in the Saudi economy regardless, irrespective if the crisis gets resolved or not,” said Ayham Kamel of Eurasia Group.

The First Episode of ‘The Twilight Zone’ Starring Kumail Nanjiani Is Now Streaming For Free

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

CBS All Access

The Twilight Zone reboot dropped its first two episode on Monday, April 1, however those on the fence about subscribing to CBS All Access to watch Jordan Peele’s re-imagining of the iconic series can watch the first episode for free online. This is not an April Fool’s joke!

“The Comedian” stars Kumail Nanjiani as a struggling standup comedian who takes some advice from a “legendary comic” played by Tracy Morgan, which ends up being a game changer for his career. But of course, that success ends up coming at a cost, and every time the character does a set to rave reviews and cheering audiences, he finds his life mysteriously changing in other ways — and not necessarily for the better.

Nanjiani tweeted out the “amazing news” on Monday. “The first episode of The Twilight Zone is FREE on YouTube! I’m in this episode and it truly is a dream come true,” he wrote. “I’ve never done anything like this episode before,” he continued, adding that it’s also free to watch on Amazon Prime.

Now Apocalypse: Avan Jogia and Kelli Berglund On Shattering Their Child Star Images

To many people, Avan Jogia and Kelli Berglund will always be the plucky young teens from Nickelodeon's Victorious and Disney XD's Lab Rats, respectively. While both Jogia and Berglund have done plenty of work outside these two series (most notably, Jogia starred in the short-lived Freeform drama Twisted and Berglund headlined Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors), they're still largely associated with those early roles, even all these years later.

But that may all change come Sunday, when the duo's new series, Now Apocalypse, debuts on Starz. A mix of a Los Angeles coming-of-age story and a trippy alien conspiracy, Gregg Araki's half-hour comedy is a bold, sex-positive examination of millennial malaise and modern relationships that is a far cry from the more wholesome work Jogia and Berglund's careers were first built on.

"There's obviously a huge difference, but it doesn't really feel any different," Jogia told TV Guide. "It's just bumming around with another fun cast of great people."

The series stars Jogia as Ulysses, an aimless, queer stoner who isn't sure if the visions he's having of a reptilian alien invasion are real or if he's just really, really high. Berglund plays Uly's best friend Carly, an aspiring actress who makes rent by being a cam girl, catering to the whims of her clients, which can range from domination and humiliation to urinating in front of them.

The series is wonderfully forward in its portrayal of sex, both in how it's filmed and in how the characters approach and discuss it. But both Jogia and Berglund are well aware that Now Apocalypse's boundary-pushing storytelling may alienate some of their fans from the Disney and Nick days. "With this show, especially, it's a lot to handle," Berglund said, "so I think it will definitely have that effect on people. But I think the people who appreciate it or appreciate you or the show is what matters."

For his part, Jogia sees this as a positive development and a means to develop a fandom that is more reflective of who he is now, rather than who he was when he started Victorious a decade ago. "If you're just pursuing and following the career you actually like, the career that you want to do, your fan base becomes more purely people who actually mess with you as an artist," Jogia explained.

"I think people, too, forget that we're human and we all grow up," added Berglund. "But to people, to the world, I'm still 16."

"People want you to not change, because if you change, they remember that they've changed," Jogia said. "It's nostalgia. So if we grow up, they have to go, 'Oh wait, I'm growing up.'"

Funnily enough, not being ready to grow up may be one thing these Victorious and Lab Rats fans may actually have in common with Jogia and Berglund's new characters. Who knows? Maybe this show will actually be a way to create some common ground.

Now Apocalypse premieres Sunday at 9/8c on Starz.

SNL's Ruth Bader Ginsburg Rap Reigns Supreme

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Ella Mai may have been the musical guest of the evening for Saturday Night Live's Steve Carell-hosted episode, but the real sing-along moment happened when Pete Davidson, Chris Redd, and Kate McKinnon teamed up to pay tribute to beloved Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by way of "Live Sheck Wes."

Retitled "Live For Ginsburg," the song champions RBG's resilience in the face of her recent fall at work, during which she suffered three broken ribs, which isn't the first time she's worked through some serious injuries.

"You think some broken ribs gon' hold her down? Hell naw, and hell naw."

The pair also pump up her position as a staunch defender of equal protection measures that protect minorities: "Fighting for women's rights, equal rights, she's the s--t. She worked for Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton. She's experienced as f--k, she should be president."

Although Matt Damon sadly wasn't around to reprise his role as the embattled justice Brett Kavanaugh, the character did come back and face the wrath of RBG after she shook up his beer so that it'd explode in his face, as the pair sang, "Supreme Court's a boys club, no cares given. Who else got six movies about 'em and still livin'?"

Notorious.

Spotify Removes Blood on the Dance Floor's Music for Violating Prohibited Content Guidelines

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Spotify has removed the entire catalogue of electronic music group Blood on the Dance Floor from its platform, the company confirmed on Tuesday (April 23).

Though the removal comes amid multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault against the group’s vocalist Dahvie Vanity (née Jesus David Torres), Spotify confirmed that the content was removed for violating its prohibited content guidelines, not as a result of the allegations.

Pressed for details, a spokesperson for Spotify said the company doesn’t comment on individual cases, though it seems likely that the group’s music -- which contains frequent references to the degradation, abuse and even murder of women -- was removed under the “Hate Content” portion of the service’s guidelines, defined as “content that expressly and principally promotes, advocates, or incites hatred or violence against a group or individual based on characteristics, including, race, religion, gender identity, sex, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, veteran status, or disability.”

Users on Twitter began reporting the removal of the band's music on Sunday (April 21).

Torres, now 34, has been accused by multiple women of various offenses, including molestation, forced oral sex and vaginal and anal rape. The current string of allegations stemmed from an August 2018 exposé published on the music website MetalSucks, followed by a December 2018 exposé on HuffPost. A second HuffPost exposé published earlier this month brought the total number of accusers to 21. Of those, 16 claim they were underage at the time of the alleged assault, including two who say there were just 13.

Sexual assault allegations were first lodged against Torres in June 2007, when 14-year-old Dianna Farrell told police that the singer forced her to perform oral sex on him at her Florida home. The police dropped that case when Farrell reportedly refused to cooperate with the investigation. In 2009, while on tour with Blood on the Dance Floor, Torres was arrested in the middle of a Denver concert for allegedly forcing another teenage girl to perform oral sex on him in a van prior to the show. He was released from jail a few days later under “unclear” circumstances, according to HuffPost.

Torres came under further scrutiny in 2010 when Blood on the Dance Floor uploaded -- and later deleted -- a YouTube video that showed the singer pushing a seemingly-intoxicated young woman to the ground and prodding her to flash the camera. A number of Torres’ former bandmates and touring partners have since publicly accused him of disturbing behavior toward teenage girls, including former Blood on the Dance Floor members Brian Griffis (“Jayy Von Monroe”) and Garrett McLaughlin (“Garrett Ecstasy”).

Blood on the Dance Floor formed in Orlando, Florida in 2007 and have released 11 studio albums under a rotating lineup. Torres is the sole remaining member of the group.

Martin Garrix & Julian Jordan Make One for the Club With 'Glitch': Watch

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

It's the end of another year, and Martin Garrix has a lot to be thankful for. He recently released the five-track BYLAW EP and celebrated with double-headline performances in his hometown during the Amsterdam Dance Event. That release set a club-forward tone with electro-house beats and high-octane tempos, and he keeps that momentum on a new collaboration with Julian Jordan

"Glitch" is an electrified instrumental. It lives up to its name with jumpy textures and a pounding beat, but it's driven by a synth-led melody that keeps the song smooth. It's paired with a black-and-white music video that stars Garrix and Jordan looking tough despite spinning camera work.

"Glitch" is out now on STMPD RCRDS. Watch the video below

Mom throws fit when daughter is not allowed to pet service dogs. It was all caught on camera.

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

If you've ever been around an adorable, friendly service dog, then you know the struggle is real. You're aware the dog is working and you can't pet it, but it's there, being a good dog! Same goes for drug-sniffing canines in airports. I desperately want to touch their big, wet noses, but they might smell the pot I'm smuggling in my down-there. So it goes.

That said, I've never thrown a fit after being denied a dog's attention. The same can't be said for one entitled mother that was recorded ~~freaking out~~ because her daughter couldn't pet several service dogs. ML Leigh is one of the handlers and uploaded the video to Facebook along with some commentary:

Um, wow.

People were shocked to see someone behave so terribly - and in public, no less - after being told 'no.' Weirdly, her daughter seems unperturbed. I guess she wasn't hellbent on petting those puppers after all.

Fortunately, no service dogs were pet without consent that day. Since her actions have gone viral, maybe this woman will read the comments (not something I'd normally advise) and get a big helping of humility re: her behavior. Something tells me she'll strike again, though. Keep your pups close!

Megyn Kelly Today Canceled at NBC News!

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

NBC News is distancing itself from Megyn Kelly.

Per to The Hollywood Reporter, the network has officially canceled Megyn Kelly's 9 a.m. Today hour with immediate effect.

What's more, the anchor is also said to be out of the running for other positions at the network, according to multiple news reports.

On Thursday, NBC News reported that talks were underway about Kelly's exit from the network and how much of her $69 million salary she should be given.

Megyn caused uproar with her comments just days ago about her views on Halloween costumes during a panel discussion.

"You do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid that was ok, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character,” she said.

The anchor went on to speak about a reality star who attempted to change the color of her skin with the aim of pulling off a Diana Ross outfit.

“People said that was racist, and I don’t know. I thought, like, who doesn’t love Diana Ross? She wants to look like Diana Ross for one day? I don’t know how that got racist on Halloween.”

This was not met with the best response by her colleagues or by viewers, and Kelly's future at the network started to look a lot less bright.

While Megyn did try to apologize on two occasions, many still called for hard and swift action from the network because of her comments.

As such, original installments of her show were taken off the air, leaving her future at the network up in the air.

With guests canceling appearances on her segment, it became apparent that this was not going to blow over after two apologies.

Megyn defected to NBC from Fox in 2017 and landed a three-year contract.

What are your thoughts on the cancellation?
